Chapter 3

Katie’s arms and legs were slick with sweat, her hair clinging to her cheeks and neck as she found herself running to the green room after the show. Jonathan brushed past her, flashing a tight grin over his shoulder as he made his way to one of the coolers. He grabbed the first beer he could reach and opened it, taking a long pull from the bottle. As Katie followed in his wake, she caught sight of Nico just behind Sylvain. Her stomach lurched at the sight of him; his face still wore his customary bright smile, but the expression in his dark eyes was as foreboding as a thundercloud.

When Katie had discovered him waiting for her in the lounge, she had checked, almost stumbling over her feet in surprise.

“Nico,” she had said, trying to conceal the alarm she felt. “I didn’t know you’d come back to the bus.” Nico smiled tightly, brushing his fingers across his pants leg and shrugging in a tight imitation of his usual indolence.

“One of the techs said he saw you come this way,” Nico replied. He had licked his lips, looking down at the floor. “I don’t think Jonathan even saw me―I was off to the side in the kitchen as he breezed through.” Katie had looked at her hands and found them clenched into fists. Even though Nico couldn’t read her as thoroughly as Jonathan, she knew she didn’t have it in her to drag the conversation through the twists and turns of a denial.

“You knew I was with Jonathan,” she pointed out, swallowing against the lump in her throat. “You knew it before you even took up with me, so it’s not like you get to be surprised about it now.” Nico shook his head.

“That’s not where I’m going with this,” Nico said, finally meeting her gaze. His eyes were dull, almost glassy as he looked at her. “I’m not surprised you were screwing around with him in the bunks. It was just…a little shocking to hear you telling him about us.” Katie had blushed a deep crimson, stumbling to the couch where Jonathan had confronted her and sitting down heavily.

“He―he wanted to know. He wanted me to tell him.” Nico shrugged again.

“As long as I knew you were seeing us separately, I could be okay with it,” Nico told her. He shook his head slowly. “I just don’t know how to feel about it, thinking of you telling Jonathan about how I get you off, how I make you come.” Katie scrubbed at her face with her hands, closing her eyes and pressing her lips together.

“I don’t know what you want me to do,” she said. “I can apologize to you―but I don’t know how to make it right.” Nico sighed, looking down at his feet for a long moment.

“It’s not your problem,” he said finally. “It’s my problem, I’ll figure it out. There’s no need to apologize. I’ll…I’ll see you later.” Nico stood quickly, fidgeting slightly as he turned away from her and walked quickly off of the bus.
